Scientists and Engineers Unveil Restored Hunley

As a cemetery with a lot of Confederate soldiers interred here, we are always doing some research into the Civil War. Today I came across a story about the restoration of the Confederate submarine Hunley. The vessel was displayed intact (mostly) for the first time Thursday since she sunk in 1864. The Hunley was the first submarine ever used successfully in combat when it sunk the USS Housatonic while on harbor duty. It sunk for the final time later that day. It was developed by Horace Hunley for the Confederacy during the Civil War. It had a tragic history being sunk multiple times with the deaths of men who crewed her. It claimed the life of Hunley himself during a training excercise in Charleston harbor. In 2000, the Hunley was raised from waters just outside Charleston harbor and engineers and scientists have been working on restoring the vessel ever since. Read more about the unveiling here.
